I’m continuously captivated with exaggerated facial expressions
in particular expressions of anxiety and despair. In paintings from the series,
The Forgotten Children”, I capture the psychological complexities of isolation
in the faces of those who have lost their innocence to cruelty and
inhumaneness. These paintings are portraits of people who are
considered to be from the outer edges of society and who convey the idea of
flaw and defect. They live amongst us, detached and grief-stricken in their
own domain. Aloof and undefined, with a ghostly façade and a grotesque smile,
they capture our attention, but their unsettling presence forces us to keep our
distance.
