My immediate response to a creepy, crawly, hairy and feathery body with fragile, long twiggy and bent legs is anxiety and fear. Instantaneously, the flapping of wings and the buzzing noise of insects makes me want to escape from any location that they may be in. To compensate, I do what I always do and add humor to what is revolting to me. In a body of work titled “Menagerie”, I use bleach to paint on one side of a grey colored folded paper, press and reopen to discover delicate and ghostly symmetrical forms that resemble extraordinary creatures. Then by adding white paint, I incorporate pearl like details that highlight the form and make it look like a transparent and delicate rendering of fine jewelry. My paintings from this series are bizarre looking creatures that personify humans and reveal an altered interpretation of them.
